Description
Excellent outdoors or indoors and one of our favorites, the Arrow Bamboo is a very beautiful and cold hardy species with erect canes that are nearly covered in long pointed leaves which can reach up to one foot long by 1.5 inches wide. When left alone and not thinned, this is one of the best bamboo for a solid screen or hedge that tops out at 12 to 18 feet in height. The lush foliage starts just above the ground providing an excellent visual barrier. It tolerates shade and works very well for stabilizing creek banks and other areas prone to erosion. This species is wind and salt tolerant but is less resistant to dryness, and is quite cold tolerant to -0 F when mulched well. Arrow Bamboo doesn’t spread nearly as much as other running species. It is very easy to control and makes a beautiful specimen plant in home foundation plantings, Asian themed gardens, woodland gardens, or landscape borders, and does equally as well in pots or other containers. An excellent indoor or outdoor bamboo. Cold hardy to 0°F.

Growing Preferences
Arrow Bamboo is very easy to grow and low maintenance. It is a tough and very versatile bamboo that grows well in most any average soil that is moist but well-drained and sun or shade. That said, it does best with morning sun and some shade or filtered sun during the mid afternoon hours. Cold hardy to 0°F.
Though Arrow Bamboo is considered a “running bamboo,” it’s one that spreads very slowly and is very easy to control, so much so that we call it a semi-clumper. Arrow Bamboo can be controlled in a small area (a normal city yard) simply by mowing or stepping on the young shoots. Keep in mind that running bamboo only puts up new shoots for a short time each year and, when they are “shooting,” the new plants are very fragile and easy to destroy. Root pruning or installing Bamboo Root Barrier are other methods to control spread.
