Description
A captivating addition to the landscape, the Azuma Japanese White Pine is a small, coniferous evergreen tree adored for its beautiful texture and soothing color. Adding about 6 inches yearly to its height, it slowly forms an irregular pyramid 8 to 10 feet tall and 5 to 7 feet wide when all grown up, making it an excellent choice for smaller garden spaces and containers. It is densely clothed in tight bunches of distinctive, short (1.5″ long), blue-green needles year round. Attractive purple-raspberry-colored cones are an excellent contrast with the foliage of the tree. An elegant and low-maintenance beauty, Azuma is a fantastic, long-lived addition to Asian or Zen-theme, rock, and conifer gardens and is highly suitable for Bonsai. It thrives in coastal environments due to its salt tolerance, and while it is listed as cold hardy to USDA Zone 5a, we hear it’s handling winter low temperatures in Zone 4 with no problem.Â
Landscape & Garden Uses
Growing up to 10 tall and 5 to 7 feet wide at its base, the Azuma Japanese White Pine is ideal for use as a specimen in sunny landscape borders or home foundation plantings, where two can be used to frame an entrance. It is perfect for rock and Asian theme gardens. With pruning, you can create endless interesting topiary forms for use as eye-catching focal point specimens in the landscape. It is also an excellent candidate for containers and Bonsai. It is a fine addition to Asian and Zen theme gardens, conifer gardens, and blue theme gardens.
Suggested Spacing:Â Â Best as a specimen, two to frame an entrance, or in spaced groupings at 9 feet or more apart
Growing Preferences
The Azuma Japanese White Pine grows best in moist, well-drained, fertile soil in full sun but tolerates some light afternoon shade. We suggest at least 6 hours of direct sunlight per day. Constantly soggy soil can cause problems with the roots, so make sure to plant it in a well-draining site. It does not require pruning; however, it responds well to it for creating topiary forms and Bonsai.
