Description
A truly spectacular Japanese White Pine, Pinus parviflora ‘Bergman’ is a beautiful small tree featuring blue-green twisting needles that contrast beautifully with the profuse bright red pollen cones displayed on the new growth in spring. The needles are whitish on the underside giving the tree a silvery look. Though some sources say it’s spreading shrub, our trees are grafted to be upright and pyramidal in form, reaching 12 to 14 feet tall and 7 to 8 feet wide when all grown up. Extremely showy and easy to grow, the outstanding texture and soothing color of Bergman is sure to be an eye-catching specimen and conversation piece in sunny garden beds or home foundation plantings.

Landscape & Garden Uses
Growing 12 to 14 feet tall and 7 to 8 feet wide, the Bergman Japanese White Pine is ideal for use as a specimen in any sunny and well-draining garden bed or home foundation planting. Also useful in spaced groupings where space allows or use two to frame an entrance. Can also be grown in containers that can be situatred on patios, decks and around other outdoor sitting areas and living spaces. Makes a nice outdoor Christmas tree. A fine addition to Asian theme gardens, conifer gardens, rock gardens and blue theme gardens.
Suggested Spacing:Â Â Best as a specimen or in spaced groupings at 8 feet or more part
Growing Preferences
Though drought tolerant when established, the Japanese White Pine grows best in a moist but well-drained fertile soil in full sun but will tolerate some light afternoon shade. We suggest at least 6 hours of direct sunlight per day. As with so many other ornamental trees, constantly soggy soil can cause problems with the roots. Does not require pruning however the candles on this pine can be pruned by up to 50 percent of their length to control the size of the tree. Branches can be selectively removed to form very interesting and unique topiary forms, though we like this one more in a dense pyramid due to the showy cones in spring.
