Description
The Blue Steel Arizona Cypress features striking blue-grey foliage and outstanding feathery texture that contrasts nicely with almost any other type of plant in the landscape. Adding 18 or more inches in height per year, and maturing in a conical form to 30 feet tall and 15 feet wide or so at the base, it is a fine choice for an eye-catching specimen, quick privacy screen or to frame the corners of tall homes. Can also be sheared to form an outdoor Christmas tree. Exceptionally low maintenance, drought tolerant and disease and insect resistant, and you might be happy to know the deer turn their nose up to it.
Landscape & Garden Uses
Growing in an upright conical form 25 to 30 feet tall and 15 to 20 feet wide, the Blue Steel Cypress is ideal for use as a specimen, in groupings or in evergreen privacy screen plantings, where it can be used solo or mixed with other evergreens to create a pleasing effect. It is also useful to frame the corners of tall homes and other buildings. A fine addition to conifer gardens, blue theme gardens, bird gardens, wildlife gardens and Xeriscape gardens (low water needs). Perfect for an outdoor Christmas tree!
Suggested Spacing: 12 to 15 feet apart for privacy screen plantings; 25 feet or more for space between trees
Growing Preferences
The Blue Steel Cypress is tolerant of a wide range of soils, even clay, preferring a moist but well-drained soil of average fertility and plenty of sunshine. Will tolerate light shade, but plants in full to mostly sun are much fuller. Minimal to no maintenance, there is no pruning necessary to keep its dense, naturally conical form. That said, it can be sheared to form an outdoor Christmas tree. Exceptionally drought tolerant when established.
