Description
A new cross hybrid of ‘Yellow Bird’ and ‘Caerhays Belle’ bred by Dennis Levina, the extra large, strikingly beautiful suacer-shaped blooms of the ‘Blushing Belle’ Magnolia are a unique soft coral-pink. Blooming on bare branches in early to mid spring, the abundant fully open flowers can measure up to 8 inches across. Immediately following the spring bloom the large, elongated green leaves unfurl to clothe the tree for the rest of the season until they turn golden-yellow before dropping for winter. A mid-size tree with an upright habit 20 to 25 feet tall and 15 to 20 feet wide, and very easy to grow in USDA Zones 5a-9b, Blushing Belle is magnificent specimen that will always have you looking forward to its stunning spring flower show!Â
Landscape & Garden Uses
Growing 20 to 25 feet tall and 15 to 20 feet wide over time, the Blushing Belle Magnolia is ideal for use as a specimen in and sunny to partially shaded landscape and woodland borders. Also a good choice to frame the corners of taller homes or entrances. As the tree grows taller, lower branches can be removed to show off as much trunk as you like. Can also be grown in large pots, planters and containers of 24 inches or more in rim diameter. A fine addition to pink theme gardens, fragrance gardens, cut flower gardens and cottage gardens.
Growing Preferences
The Blushing Belle Magnolia is easy to grow in most any moist but well-drained acidic soil of average fertility and full sun to part shade. She prefers full sun for best flowering, however will handle some partial shade. In the deep South, some shade during the hottest mid-afternoon hours of summer might be appreciated. She likes a consistently moist soil but constantly soggy or wet soils can be problematic. Tolerates short dry periods when established. In alkaline soils, apply soil sulfur and/or chelated iron to increase acidity. Pruning usually isn’t necessary, however stray or damaged branches can be pruned immediately after flowering in spring. Feed after flowering in spring with a mild organic plant food or a well-balanced shrub and tree food containing iron or sulfur.
