Description
This cultivar, Abies nordmanniana ‘Borjomi’, commonly called Borjomi Nordmann Fir, is a rare selection discovered in the country of Georgia. It is noted for its softer needles, better needle retention, and longer life span. With a moderate to fast growth rate of 12 to 24 inches per year, it forms a tall, stately tree with a narrow pyramidal from 30 to 50 feet tall and 15 to 20 feet wide at maturity, depending on climate. This makes it an excellent choice for a focal point specimen, grouping, or in privacy screen plantings. Its slightly ascending branches are clothed in rich, dark green glossy foliage, with contrasting bright green new growth in spring. It produces attractive, cylindrical, dark brownish-red cones. It prefers cooler climates in USDA Zones 4a-7b, and doesn’t like hot summers below Zone 6b. Conifers don’t like being moved, so choose the right spot for this eye-catching beauty, preferably one with well-drained but moist soil and five or more hours of sunlight daily.
Landscape & Garden Uses
Growing 30 to 50 feet tall and 15 to 20 feet wide, the Borgomi Nordmann Fir is an eye-catching specimen in sunny landscape borders. It can also be grouped or used in privacy screen plantings or to frame the corners of tall homes and other buildings. It is a fine addition to conifer gardens, rock gardens, alpine gardens, and Asian gardens.
Suggested Spacing:Â 10 feet apart in staggered row privacy screen plantings; 25′ or more apart for space between trees
Growing Preferences
The Borjomi Nordmann Fir is easy to grow in moist, well-drained soil of average fertility. As with many other conifers, constantly soggy or wet soils can be problematic, leading to root rot or other harmful plant diseases. So make sure to plant in well-drained soil, whether in the ground or pots. It will grow well in full sun or partial shade. We suggest five or more hours of sunlight daily for the best overall performance. It will handle short dry spells but might appreciate occasional supplemental water to maintain moist soil during extended summer droughts. No pruning is necessary though it responds well to candle-pruning to form an outdoor Christmas tree.
