Description
A super fast growing hybrid red maple tree with a more narrow canopy, the Brandywine Maple is a cross of Acer rubrum ‘October Glory’ and Acer rubrum ‘Autumn Flame’. The result is a mid-size maple tree with beautiful dark green leaves that turn bright red in the fall and fading gradually to a brilliant purple-red before dropping for the winter. Due to its parentage, the Brandywine Maple is a fast grower adding 3 to 4 feet in height per year, growing to about half the size of the species with a more upright, narrow form to only 15 feet wide or so, which makes it ideal for use in smaller landscapes or to line a street or driveway. Brandywine Maple is sure to add exceptional beauty to your landscape while also substantially increasing the value of your property.
Landscape & Garden Uses
Growing 25 to 30 feet in height and 15 or so feet wide at maturity, the Brandywine Maple is ideal for use as a specimen, in groupings, or to line a street, driveway or property line. Its narrower canopy lends well for use as a shade tree in small to medium size landscapes and to frame the corners or tall homes or other buildings. A fine addition to bird gardens and the Xeriscape (low water needs).
Suggested Spacing:Â 10 to 12 feet apart for solid screen; 20 feet or more apart for space between trees
Growing Preferences
The Brandywine Maple is very easy to grow in most any moist but well-drained soil of average fertility and in full sun to part shade. Established trees are quite drought tolerant. We’ve seen absolutely no problems with insects or disease and deer won’t touch it.
