Description
Forming a narrow pointed column 10 to 12 feet tall and only a couple of feet wide when all grown up, the Brobeck’s Tower Arborvitae is the perfect vertical accent for a small garden space. It is also excellent for framing an entrance, as a hedge or screen in tight situations, or as a container centerpiece. Similar in appearance to ‘Degroot’s Spire,’ but narrower and shorter, it is densely clothed in attractive dark green fan-like leaves, providing a unique texture that contrasts nicely with many other types of plants in the landscape. A super-hardy and easy-to-grow North American native, Brobeck’s Tower can handle temperatures to -50F and thrives in various soil types, provided they are well-drained. Sure to be an exclamation point in the garden or landscape.Â
Landscape & Garden Uses
Growing in a narrow column 10 to 12 feet tall and about 2 feet wide over time, Brobeck’s Tower Arborvitae is ideal for use as a vertical accent in home foundation plantings, garden beds, or landscape borders. It’s the perfect choice for a narrow hedge or screen, to line driveways or property lines, or use two to frame an entrance. It also grows well in pots and other containers, serving as a unique centerpiece with foliage that contrasts nicely with flowers and other plants. A natural choice for conifer gardens, formal gardens, rock gardens, and the Xeriscape (low water needs).
Spacing:Â Â 18 to 24 inches apart for solid hedge; 5 feet or more apart for space between plants
Growing Preferences
Arborvitae are very easy to grow in moist but well-drained soils of average fertility and full sun to part shade. A wide range of soils are tolerated, including red clay, but Arborvitae prefers moist but well-drained neutral to alkaline loamy soil. Though moderately drought tolerant when established, they don’t like an overly dry site. Maintenance is minimal, with very little, if any, pruning ever required.
