Description
This is the single-trunk patio tree version of the Brown Turkey Fig, one of the most cold-hardy fig varieties, and self-fertile, so you only need one to produce fruit. It makes a heavy crop of medium to large-sized, bell-shaped, deliciously sweet fruit with purplish brown skin. Fruits are produced in summer, and there’s usually a secondary crop in the fall. The fruit is excellent for fresh eating, cooking, canning, drying, and in jams, jellies, and preserves. Large, palmate leaves up to 10″ long provide a tropical look in the landscape.
NOTE:Â As with all of our other plants and trees, all of our fruit plants are grown in containers outdoors so they are fully rooted and landscape-ready upon arrival.
Landscape & Garden Uses
Interested in edible landscaping? What could be more enjoyable and rewarding than creating an edible landscape? Fig trees are fine specimens for use in the edible landscape. Their large and bold leaves provide a tropical effect in the landscape, and you’ll be rewarded with loads of delicious figs. The Brown Turkey Fig tree is ideal for the home orchard and makes for a fine specimen or warm-season privacy screen in landscape borders. Provide plenty of space, as this one can reach up to 20 feet in height and width.
Growing Preferences
Fig trees will grow reasonably well in most soil types. They produce the best fruit in moderately to slightly acidic, moist but well-drained, fertile soil that is rich in organic matter. In soil with low fertility, it’ll be worth your time to mix in some organic compost to the native soil. They prefer the soil to retain a sufficient water supply, particularly during fruit development in summer. However, they avoid excessive water that would keep the soil constantly soggy or wet, as this can be problematic. The best and most fruits will be produced when trees are growing in full sun. However, fig trees that receive a little shade during the hottest part of summer days will still produce good crops.
NOTE:Â In USDA Zone 7, it would be a good idea to provide some winter protection for your Brown Turkey Fig Tree. A heavy layer of mulch will help protect the roots during winter. Planting your Brown Turkey Fig on the east side of a home, or where it will be sheltered from north and western winds, will also provide long-term protection during the cold season.Â
