Description
Living up to its name, the Candlelight Scotch Pine will light up the landscape. Through spring, the candle-like new growth emerges glowing light yellow, standing out beautifully against the handsome, greyish blue-green older foliage. The tips of the needles remain noticeably light green throughout the year. Candlelight has a moderate growth rate of about 8 to 12 inches per year, reaching around 20 to 25 feet tall and 10-12 feet wide with a pyramidal form. Very low maintenance and easy to grow in sunny locations, it will thrive in almost any well-drained soil, even sandy, rocky, and highly acidic soils. It is extremely cold tolerant to -50F and drought tolerant when established.Â
Landscape & Garden Uses
Growing in a pyramidal form to 20 to 25 feet tall and 10 to 12 feet wide or more, the Candlelight Scotch Pine is ideal for use as a focal point or in spaced groupings in sunny to partly shaded landscape borders. It’s also nice to frame the corners of tall homes, other buildings, or an entrance. A fine addition to conifer gardens, rock gardens, yellow theme gardens, bird gardens, Asian gardens, Zen gardens, and the Xeriscape (low water needs).
Suggested Spacing:Â 15′ or more apart in spaced groupings
Growing Preferences
The Candlelight Scotch Pine is easy to grow in moist but well-drained soil with average to low fertility and six hours or more of sunlight daily. It has high drought tolerance when established. As with many other conifers, constantly soggy or wet soils can be problematic, leading to root rot or other harmful plant diseases. So make sure to plant this one in well-drained soil. It doesn’t require pruning; however, it responds well to it. Candle pruning can be performed annually to maintain a smaller size tree.
