Description
Â
Another great selection in the Frost Kiss Helleborus series, Cheryl’s Shine features abundant shining flowers against extremely dark foliage, From mid winter well into spring, this incredibly floriferous beauty displays large, gently nodding, saucer-shaped glowing flowers with soft peachy pink petals suffused with creamy white that gradually become darker pink towards the petals edge. At the center of the flower is contrasting burst of yellow stamens and a dark red carpel. The abundant, long-lasting flowers are perched atop strong and sturdy stems to about 18 inches tall which make them excellent for cutting and display in floral arrangements and bouquets. The nectar-rich flowers offer emerging winter and early spring bees an essential food source at a time when not much else is blooming in the garden. The flower stems rise above a handsome clump of evergreen, leathery, very deep green leaves with silver veining. Virtually problem-free and exceptionally long-lived, this delightful winter bloomer thrives in partially shaded garden beds, even under the canopies of large trees, as well as in container gardens for situating on patios, porches, decks and around other outdoor sitting and living spaces.
Landscape & Garden Uses
Growing 15 to 18 inches tall and 2 feet wide or more over time, the Cheryl’s Shine Helleborus is ideal for use as an accent in smaller spaces and containers or in groupings, massed as a groundcover in landscape and woodland borders, or as a border along walkways and paths. Perfect under large shade trees, decks, covered porches and any other shady location. Don’t think you have any shade? Look on the east side of your home. A fine addition to shade gardens, winter gardens, beneficial pollinator gardens, pink theme gardens, cottage gardens, cut flower gardens and woodland gardens.
Suggested Spacing:Â 18 inches apart for mass plantings; 3 feet or more apart for space between plants
Growing Preferences
Cheryl’s Shine Helleborus is very easy to grow in most any moist but well-drained soil of average fertility and part shade to shade. Though Helleborus will tolerate mostly sun in cool-summer climates, we think they look and perform their best with part shade to full shade, which makes them perfect for planting under tall decks, large shade trees and other shady areas. Morning and/or evening sun or all-day filtered sun is fine. Direct afternoon sun, especially in USDA Zones 7 to 9, is not suggested. Plant with the top of the root ball even with ground level. Care and maintenance are minimal. Feed in spring with an organic plant food.
