Description
We’ve always adored the Mimosa tree and ‘Chocolate Fountain’ brings a whole new form and color to this species. Like its cousins, Chocolate Fountain is a fast grower but sports the finely divided fern-like leaves up to 20 inches long in a luscious shade of dark chocolate-purple, The leaves cloth weeping branches that give the tree a distinctive fountain-like look. What’s more, over a long period from early summer through mid summer, fragrant, fluffy, bicolor pink and white powderpuff-like flowers contrast beautifully with the dark foliage. Though it will grow to around 20 feet tall and 10 to 15 feet wide, it responds very well to pruning so can be maintained at half that size with an annual pruning, which makes it a fine candidate for growing in large containers. Easy to grow and super low maintenance when established, Chocolate Fountain will thrive in full blazing sun to partial shade and just about any type of well-drained soil. It will appreciate a moist soil to establish itself during the first growing season but handles drought well after that. A stunning and exotic beauty that brings a tropical look and feel to the landscape. Sure to be a standout and conversation piece.
Landscape & Garden Uses
Growing 15 to 20 feet tall and 10 to 15 as wide with no pruning, the Chocolate Fountain Weeping Mimosa Tree is ideal for use in design as a focal point specimen or in spaced groupings or to frame an entrance in sunny to partially shaded landscape and woodland borders. We like using it around outdoor sitting and living spaces where its foliage and pretty flowers can be enjoyed from close up. A fine addition to tropical look gardens, butterfly and hummingbird gardens, Asian and Zen gardens and pink theme gardens.
Growing Preferences
The Chocolate Fountain Weeping Mimosa is very easy to grow in most any moist but well drained soil of average to even poor fertility, including clay, and full sun to part shade. It has moderate drought tolerance when established however will perform its best in a moist soil, but not constantly soggy or wet. The more sun the better for best foliage color and flower production. No pruning is necessary though the tree responds well to it for size control and shaping purposes. Any pruning should be done in late winter before new growth begins to emerge. USDA Zones: 6a-10b Find Your Zone
