Description
Coast Lecouthoe, also known as Fetterbush or Coast Doghobble, is a graceful native evergreen flowering shrub that loves life on the shady side. It is a mounding shrub 3 to 4 feet tall and 4 to 6 feet with arching stems clothed in beautiful, leathery, lance-shaped glossy leaves that emerge bronze in spring, turning to rich green in summer, and then purplish to wine-red leaves during the winter. In early to mid-spring, abundant clusters of fragrant, urn-shaped white flowers droop from the leaf axils. Coastal Leucothoe will add elegance, unique texture, and color to any garden bed or woodland border, combining beautifully with perennial ferns, hosta lilies, woodland grasses, and many other natural-looking shade-loving plants and trees. You might be happy to know that the deer and rabbits turn their nose to it.
The genus name Leucothoe comes from Greek mythology, being one of the maidens loved by Apollo.
Landscape & Garden Uses
Growing in a mound to 3 to 4 feet tall and 4 to 6 feet wide, the Coast Leucothoe is ideal for an accent in smaller garden spaces or in groupings or as a natural hedge in shady landscapes, woodlands, flowering shrub borders, and home foundation plantings. It is excellent for planting on shady slopes and creekbanks to help stabilize the soil. It is a fine addition to woodland gardens, rain gardens, butterfly gardens, beneficial pollinator gardens, fragrance gardens, and native plant gardens, and looks especially nice around boulders and garden ponds.Â
Suggested Spacing:Â 3 to 3.5 feet apart for solid hedges;Â 8 feet or more apart for space between plants
Growing Preferences
Coast Leucothoe is easy to grow in organically rich, moist, well-drained soils, from partial to full shade. For the best appearance and performance, we suggest some shade or dappled shade in the afternoon. Maintenance is minimal except for snipping a stray branch here or there.Â
