Description
One of the most impressive and eye-catching plants in our gardens, ‘Crippsii’ is a bright gold form of the False Cypress or Hinoki Cypress that adds both exciting texture and stunning color in the landscape. Often used as a colorful specimen, Crippsii grows faster than many other false cypress varieties reaching a height of 30 to 40 feet and 15 to 20 feet wide over time. As with other Hinoki Cypress, the tree has an upright pyramidal form with twisting branches forming forming sprays of pendulous, feathery, golden yellow foliage.
Landscape & Garden Uses
With an upright habit and pyramidal form 30 to 40 feet tall and 15 to 20 feet wide, the Crippsii Golden Hinoki Cypress is ideal for use as a specimen, to frame in the corners of tall homes and other structures, or in groupings or privacy screen plants in sunny landscape borders. Also does well in pots, planters and other containers. A fine addition to conifer gardens, yellow theme gardens, Asian theme gardens, and the Xeriscape (low water needs).
Suggested Spacing: 8 to 10 feet apart for privacy screens; 22 feet or more apart for space between plants
Growing Preferences
The Crippsii Cypress is exceptionally hardy and easy to grow in a moist to somewhat dry but well-drained soil of average fertility and full sun to part shade. Foliage color is more intense with more sun. As with so many other ornamental plants, constantly soggy or wet soil is problematic. Avoid overwatering, providing only enough water to maintain a damp to moist soil. When established the Crippsii Cypress is exceptionally drought tolerant and would only need supplemental irrigation during prolonged periods of dry weather. No pruning required. In fact, we think pruning or shearing destroys the natural beauty of the tree.
