Description
Named after the highly acclaimed ballerina, from late spring to the first frost in fall the Darcey Bussell English Shrub Rose features abundant clusters of fully double rosettes in a rich shade of deep purplish crimson pink aging with a tinge of mauve. Upon opening, the outer petals of each bloom form a perfect ring around an inner cup of densely packed “pirouetting” petals, gradually fully opening to form a perfect rosette with over 70 petals. Forming a bushy, rounded shrub to 4 feet high and equally as wide, Darcey Bussell is a perfect choice for growing in sunny to mostly sunny garden beds or containers for situating on or around patios and other outdoor sitting and living spaces where the stunning flowers and fragrance can be enjoyed from close up. Though she will tolerate some afternoon shade, as with other roses, make sure to give her plenty of morning sun to dry the dew from the leaves. Very hardy, handling cold and heat and humidity in USDA Zones 5 through 11, you’ll also appreciate she has demonstrated very good resistance to disease and pests. Expect Darcey Bussell to impress just as much in the garden as the ballerina she is named after does on stage.Â
Landscape & Garden Uses
Growing to 4 feet tall and equally as wide, the Darcey Bussell English Shrub Rose is ideal for use as an accent, in groupings or as a hedge in sunny borders. her smaller stature makes for a good fit in containers that can be situated on or around patios, decks and around other outdoor sitting and living spaces. A fine addition to cottage gardens, red or purple theme gardens, cutting gardens and fragrance gardens.
Growing Preferences
The Darcey Bussell English Shrub Rose is easy to grow in most any moist but well-drained soil of average or above average fertility and full to mostly sun for the best flowering. As with all other roses, morning sun is a must to dry dew from the leaves but some light afternoon shade or filtered sun is okay. Flowering will be best if the plant receives at least 6 hours of direct sun during the day. Has deomstrated good drought tolerance when established and high disease resistance.Â
