Description
A midsize Lilac growing 6 to 8 feet tall and equally as wide, ‘Declaration’ is adored for its abundant and incredibly showy flower clusters packed with red buds that open to dark dusky purple flowers. As with other lilacs, the flowers are delightfully fragrant filling the yard with heavenly sweet aroma in spring, and you can cut a few to display in your favorite vase. Fresh green heart-shaped leaves remain attractive through the season. Excellent in the flowering shrub border or as a specimen or natural hedge in sunny landscape borders. Perfect around patios, porches, decks and other outdoor living spaces where the fragrance can be enjoyed from close up. Carefree and disease and deer resistant, the Declaration Lilac is one of those gorgeous flowering plants that will always have you looking forward to spring!
Landscape & Garden Uses
Growing 6 to 8 feet tall and equally as wide, the Declaration Lilac is ideal for use in smaller garden spaces where its larger growing cousins won’t fit. It is ideal for use as a specimen or hedge in landscape borders or as an accent in home foundation plantings or around patios, decks, porches and outdoor sitting and living spaces where the beautiful flowers and wonderful fragrance can be enjoyed from close up. A fine addition to fragrance gardens, purple theme gardens, cut flower gardens, butterfly gardens and cottage gardens.Â
Suggested Spacing:Â 6 feet apart for solid hedges; 10 feet or more apart for space between plants
Growing Preferences
The Declaration Lilac is easy to grow in a moist but well drained soil of average fertility and full sun to part shade. Prefers a neutral to alkaline soil pH (6.5-8.0). Add pelletized agricultural lime to sweeten acid soils. Fertilize once, in early spring, with a light application of an organic plant food or slow-release shrub & tree fertilizer. Prune as necessary right after bloom in spring.
