Description
Sure to be a conversation piece in the garden, Blephilia ciliata, commonly called Pagoda Plant or Downy Wood Mint, is an easy-to-grow North American native in the mint family that has both outstanding ornamental features and culinary uses. It is a clump-forming perennial that features sturdy square stems to 30 inches tall bearing showy, whorled, globular flower clusters arranged in a tiered, pagoda-like structure along stems. The cluster is packed with rows of two-lipped bluish purple to bluish pink flowers with purple spots that are produced from mid or late spring through early to mid summer. Butterflies and a variety of other beneficial pollinators will thank you for planting this one. The attractive, grey-green lanceolate leaves are fragrant when crushed and can be used as a flavoring in drinks and sauces. You might be happy to know that the deer don’t like the minty scent of this plant so turn their nose up to it.
Wildlife Benefits
The flowers of the Downy Pagoda Plant attract butterflies, skippers and long-tongued and short-tongued bees, bee flies and Syrphid flies.
Landscape & Garden Uses
Growing to 30 inches tall in bloom and 18 inches wide or some, the Downy Pagoda Plant is ideal for use as a specimen in smaller garden spaces or containers or in groupings in larger garden beds. A fine addition to herb gardens, butterfly and pollinator gardens, fragrance gardens, native gardens, meadow and prairie gardens and cottage gardens.
Suggested Spacing:Â 18″ apart for groupings;Â 3′ or more apart for space between plants
Growing Preferences
Downy Pagoda Plant is easy to grow in a moist but well drained soil of average fertility and full sun to part shade. We suggest at least 4 hours of direct sunlight for best flowering and overall performance. Morning sun is suggested in order to dry dew from the leaves. Has moderate drought tolerance when established and does not likie a constantly soggy or wet soil.
