A lovely bright green creeping plant that spreads quickly as a lawn substitute, groundcover, or as a soil cover in container gardens, Herniaria glabra, commonly called Green Carpet or Dwarf Rupturewort, forms a dense 3-inch high by 24-inch wide carpet of tightly-packed leaves wherever it grows. The foliage handles foot traffic quite well and turns a pleasing red color during the winter months. This makes it a candidate for planting to fill gaps between stepping stones however some edging will be necessary. The plant has long tap root so is exceptionally drought tolerant when established. Tiny white star-shaped flowers are produced during summer but, for the most part, go unnoticed nestled in the vibrant green foliage. Herniaria glabra is one of those unsung heroes that is underused in the landscape. 

Growing only 2 to 3 inches tall and spreading 18 to 24 inches wide, Herniaria glabra is ideal for use as a lawn substitute, as a groundcover or underplanting around shrubs, trees and other plants, as a border along paths and walkways, or as a soil cover in container gardens. A fine underplanting for small trees such as Japanese maples. Emerging flower bulb plants will pop right through it in spring.

Rupturewort is very easy to grow in a wide range of soils and soil conditions, except for constantly soggy or wet soils. It prefers a moist but well-drained soil of average fertility but also tolerates dry conditions. It grows well in full sun to part shade.
