Description
A simply stunning accent tree and improvement over older golden varieties of Oriental Spruce, as its name suggests, ‘Early Gold’ displays its golden foliage two weeks earlier than others, contrasting beautifully with the darker green older leaves. As the season progresses, the foliage turns to darker green with gold frosting through the rest of the year. Add showy cherry-red cones that turn to purple to its already colorful foliage and interesting form, and you have a truly outstanding feature in the landscape that draws the eye and grabs attention. A moderate grower adding 8 to 10 inches in height per year, and more compact than other varieties, Early Gold reaches about 10 to 12 feet in height and 5 to 6 feet wide at its base when fully grown. Its small stature makes it a good fit for smaller landscapes and garden spaces, and it is a fine accent tree in home foundation plantings. Needless to say, it is right at home in Oriental-themed gardens, and looks lovely in rock gardens and near boulders. It is one of those trees that will always have you looking forward to its spring color show.
Note:Â Early Gold Oriental Spruce will grow in full sun to part shade. That said, in USDA Zones 7-8, where summers are hot, it will appreciate some filtered sun or shade during the afternoon hours when the sunlight is most intense. For the best foliage color, we recommend five or more hours of sunlight daily at any location.
Landscape & Garden Uses
Growing 10 to 12 feet tall and 5 to 6 feet wide over time, the Early Gold Oriental Spruce is ideal for use as a focal point specimen to draw attention to an area of the landscape. It is a fine, evergreen accent tree for home foundation plantings and a good candidate for pots, planters, and other containers. It is excellent for decorating as an outdoor Christmas tree and is a fine addition to conifer gardens, yellow-themed gardens, rock gardens, and Asian-themed gardens.
Suggested Spacing:Â Best as a specimen or in spaced groupings at eight or more feet apart
Growing Preferences
Early Gold Oriental Spruce is easy to grow in a moist but well-drained soil of average fertility. Constantly soggy or wet soils can be problematic, leading to root rot or other harmful plant diseases. So make sure to plant this one in well-drained soil, whether in the ground or in pots. It grows well in full sun in cool summer climates of USDA Zones 4-7, but will appreciate filtered sun or shade during the afternoon hours when the sunlight is most intense in hot summer climates of USDA Zones 7-8. For the best foliage color, five or more hours of direct sunlight per day is suggested.
