Edgeworthia Chrysantha – Paper Bush – 3 Gallon

I had an Edgworthia in my old garden in Pennsylvania and missed it when I had to move and downsize. I always loved the flower buds in winter, like little pearls covering the shrub. I have been on the lookout for another one since moving and was thrilled to find it in the Wilson Bros Gardens catalogue. The plant arrived promptly after ordering, very well packaged and very healthy looking. The experience with this nursery was great! It was my first time 1) buying a plant outside of Home Depot and 2) buying a plant online. Paper Bush arrived in perfect condition, with glossy leaves and new growth unfurling. Can’t wait to see the flowers next winter. Just recently started buying from Wilson brothers; always looking for plants that are not carried by a big box store. I smuggled a baby edgeworthia home in a suitcase in the past and was happy to see it here. It arrived quickly and the packaging was great. The plant is very healthy and a good price for the size. Wilson Brothers packed this plant (3-gallon pot, multiple branches) extremely well for shipping — there was zero damage to the branches, and the soil was intact in the pot. The plant was professionally pruned. It was perfect for transplanting — fully rooted, but not root bound at all, and just ready to leaf out (leaves began opening only a few days after arrival).
It’s too soon to comment on whether I’ll like the Edgeworthia, because it hasn’t grown in my yard yet. When I saw this Edgeworthia and read about it I had to have it! I talked my yardman into moving a Shilling-the size of my washing machine-close to the house so I could make room for it under a Japanese maple. Three weeks later is sprouting leaves. This Edgeworthia arrived in good shape and with unexpected leaves, from Georgia, I believe. After planting in my Seattle garden, the leaves eventually fell off to highlight the beautiful tight buds of my winter Edgeworthia. I bought the larger size last in late fall and it arrived in perfect condition. We were not sure where to plant it so we sank the pot in the vegetable garden. In late February that little bush has many beautiful flowers clusters. When it matures it will be breathtaking. It is already growing leaves. I saw this plant in an episode of Garden Smart and had to have it. I am so happy with it. Had this plant installed awhile ago,,,,, it’s still alive from what the gardener says, but not doing anything…perhaps gone dormant…. will keep an eye on this plant. —————— WBG Reply: Hi Bobbi – Thanks for providing your review. The Edgeworthia is a deciduous shrub so won’t have any leaves during the winter months…usually from October or November through March. Being that you’re in Georgia, your plant should put on new leaves sometime in early spring. The ones in our gardens are in full bloom right now (2/15/2018) so it will probably be at least another month before leaves begin to emerge. This was the 2nd paper bush that we bought. The first one was in a combined order and while all the other plants were in excellent shape the bush was fried after the trip cross country. After talking with the folks and sending pictures the cost of the first bush was refunded. EXCELLENT service from the team. Oh my god…I had no idea how wonderfully fragrant paperbushes would be. It’s February and my plant blooming right now with a few flowers. I can’t imagine what it will be like when the plants are as big in pictures I’ve seen with hundreds of flowers. I’ve ordered one more from you to go in another spot…one for the backyard and one for the front. The plants you sent were very nice.
