Description
A particularly charming little evergreen shrub or groundcover, the Emerald ‘N Gold Euonymus sports showy variegated green and yellow boxwood-like leaves on a dwarf mounding form 12 to 24 inches tall and 2 to 4 feet wide depending on pruning. It responds well to pruning or shearing any time of year, so it is ideal for shaping into globes, squares, or rectangles, or for a tight formal hedge as low as 18 inches tall and wide. That said, it keeps a dense form whether pruned or not. Highly adaptable, it grows in most any moist but well-drained soil of average fertility and full sun or part shade, needing only a few hours of direct sunlight to maintain its brightest color. It is also disease, heat, and drought-resistant when established. A bright accent year-round in small garden spaces and containers, in groupings on slopes, or as a hedge in landscape borders and where a low-growing evergreen shrub is needed in home foundation plantings.Â
Landscape & Garden Uses
Growing 12 to 24 inches tall and 2 to 4 feet wide depending on pruning, The Emerald ‘N Gold Euonym us is ideal for use as a colorful evergreen accent in small garden spaces and containers. It can be grouped or used as a low border or natural or clipped formal hedge in larger spaces. It is very nice where a low-growing evergreen shrub is needed in home foundation plantings. It responds very well to pruning at any time of the year, which lends well to forming globe, square, or rectangle topiary shapes. A fine addition to Asian gardens, yellow theme gardens, and formal gardens.
Suggested Spacing:Â Â 24 to 30 inches apart for mass plantings; 5 feet or more apart for space between plants
Growing Preferences
Emerald ‘N Gold Euonymus is easy to grow in most any moist but well-drained soil of average fertility and full sun to partial shade. We suggest at least 4 hours of sunlight per day. While it doesn’t like a constantly soggy soil, it is moderately drought tolerant when established, only requiring an occasional drink during extended periods of drought. It does not require pruning but responds well to almost any amount for shaping purposes, formal hedges, and size control. It can be trimmed any time of year. It is hardy in USDA Zones 5a-9b.
