Description
An alluring tree that will not go unnoticed in the landscape, the Evening Light Japanese Snowbell captivates with color, fragrance and form. Perhaps its most notable outstanding feature is the glossy deep mahogany to purple-black leaves that provide a stunning contrast to the abundant downward pendulous clusters of wonderfully fragrant, bell-shaped white flowers that come in late spring and again in fall with adequate soil moisture during summer. The hummingbirds and butterflies will appreciate the flowers. We suggest at 6 hours or more of direct sunlight per day for the deepest foliage color throughout the growing season. It is also distinct from other upright varieties in that it forms a more columnar-oval shape that might reach 15 to 20 feet tall and 6 to 10 feet wide when all grown up. This makes it a fine fit as an enchanting focal point specimen for smaller garden spaces, as an accent or to frame corners in home foundation plantings, or in spaced groupings where space allows. Excellent around patios and other outdoor sitting and living spaces where the foliage and fragrance can be enjoyed from close up.Â
Styrax japonicus ‘Evening Light’ was found as chance seedling by Henny Kolster in Boskoop, Netherlands.
Landscape & Garden Uses
Growing 12 to 16 feet tall and 6 to 10 feet wide, the Evening Light Japanese Snowbell is ideal for use a focal point specimen or accent tree in sunny landscape borders and home foundation plantings. Where space allows it is very nice in spaced groupings or to line a walk or drive. Perfect around outdoor sitting and living spaces where the foliage and fragrance flowers can be enjoyed from close up. A fine addition to woodland gardens, bird gardens, purple or black theme gardens, fragrance gardens and cottage gardens.
Suggested Spacing:Â 15 feet for space between trees
Growing Preferences
The Evening Light Japanese Snowbell is very easy to grow in most any moist but well-drained soil of average fertility and full to mostly sun. Shade is tolerated but foliage color is best with at least 6 hours or more of direct sunlight per day. Very low maintenance when left alone and we’ve seen no serious insect or disease problems. Lower branches can be removed to a desired height to expose more trunk. Stray branches or stems can be removed for shaping purposes.Â
