Description
Introduced by father and son team, Felix and Mark Jury out of New Zealand, the ‘Felix Jury’ Magnolia wins the award for the most impressive flowers we’ve ever seen, producing abundant flowers up to 12 inches in diameter! Deep pink buds open to enormous, gorgeous, semidouble rose-shaped flowers in rich shades of rose-pink. Not only are the blooms large, but the green leaves can reach up to 16 inches in length, providing a lush, tropical look and feel in the landscape. An incredibly unique and captivating spring-flowering tree that will always have you looking forward to its magnificent spring bloom, making it a conversation piece, delighting all who see it in your yard!
Landscape & Garden Uses
With an upright, narrow pyramidal habit 20 to 25 feet tall and 8 to 10 feet wide at maturity, the Felix Jury Magnolia is ideal for use as an accent specimen tree in sunny landscape and woodland borders. It is also excellent for use as an accent tree in home foundation plantings. It can also be grown in large pots, planters, and other containers with a rim diameter of 24 inches or more; however, it may eventually need to be transplanted to the ground. A fine addition to pink theme gardens, fragrance gardens, cut flower gardens, beneficial pollinator gardens, tropical-look gardens, and cottage gardens.
Growing Preferences
The Felix Jury Magnolia is easy to grow in moist, but well-drained, acidic soil of average fertility, and requires five or more hours of sunlight daily. In the deep South, some filtered sun or shade during the hottest mid-afternoon hours of summer will be appreciated. Avoid constantly soggy or wet soils. In alkaline soils, apply soil sulfur and/or chelated iron to increase acidity. Pruning usually isn’t necessary; however, stray branches can be pruned immediately after flowering in spring for shaping purposes. Feed after flowering in spring with a mild organic plant food or a well-balanced shrub and tree food containing iron or sulfur.
