Description
When we heard the name ‘Flip Side’, the first thing we wondered is how this Chaste Tree got its name. Then we looked at a photo of the foliage and knew why. The leaves of this hybrid cross between Vitex trifolia ‘Purpurea’ and Vitex agnus-castus are grey-green on top, and when the leaf is “flipped” over by the breeze, the purple undersides flash – a captivating site! As summer arrives the upper sides of the leaves take on a greyish-mauve tint finally turning to an attractive pumpkin-orange in fall. A very cool flowering tree with unique coloration that draws attention in the landscape. But the colorful leaves aren’t the only special attribute. Read on.
In summer, abundant 6 to 8 inch long panicles of fragrant bluish-purple flowers appear that attract butterflies and other beneficial pollinators we want and need in the garden. What’s more, Flip Side is a strong repeat bloomer that blooms well into fall and the flowers contrast beautifully with the foliage.
Flip Side Chaste Tree was voted ‘Best Shrub of The Year’ in 2019 by Fine Gardening Magazine….but is it a shrub or a tree? Both, actually…it’s up to you. Growing to 8 feet tall and wide, Flip Side can be left to grow naturally shrub or lower branches can be removed to form a highly attractive small tree.
Exceptionally easy to grow and low maintenance, the Flip Side Chaste Tree deserves a spot in every landscape where it will grow. USDA Zones: 6a-9b  Find Your ZoneÂ
Landscape & Garden Uses
Depending on your preference, the Flip Side Chaste Tree quickly grows to form a multi or single trunk large shrub or small tree to about 8 feet tall and 8 feet wide. It is ideal for ase as a focal point specimen, in groupings of three or more where space allows, or to frame the corners of homes and other structures. Can also be planted in straight or staggered rows to make a colorful hedge and looks especially nice around garden ponds and other bodies of water. A fine addition to purple theme gardens, hummingbird gardens, butterfly gardens, bird gardens and rock gardens.
Suggested Spacing:Â 6 feet apart for solid hedge; 14 feet or more apart for space between plants
Note:Â Â For our customers who live and garden north of USDA Plant Hardiness Zone 5a, where this Vitex variety is not reliably winter hardy, you’ll be happy to know it can be grown in containers that can be brought indoors during winter and placed back outside when temperatures warm up in spring.
Growing Preferences
Chaste Tree will grow in most any average soil, including clay soils. It prefers a moist but well-drained soil however will tolerate temporary wet conditions. As with so many other ornamental shrubs and trees, constantly wet soil can be problematic. Good drought tolerance when established.
Note:Â This chaste tree is listed as cold hardy in USDA Zones 7a-9b. We’re not sure about Flip Side, but if it’s like some other Vitex varieties, it might die back during winter and resprout from the roots in spring. If so, cut the plant back to the ground like you would a butterfly bush and it will quickly regrow to a 4 to 6 foot shrub.
