Description
Living up to its name, ‘Frank’s Masterpiece’ is a hybrid magnolia that truly is a masterpiece. In early spring and sporadically into summer, abundant tulip-shaped fragrant flowers measuring up to a whopping 10 inches in size are perched at the ends of almost every stem on the tree. Opening from erect deep purple-red buds, the two-toned flowers have petals that are reddish purple on the outside and white with a hint of soft pink on the inside. Lush foliage consisting of large, elongated, rich green leaves are attractive through the season turning to yellow in fall. Reaching up to 30 feet tall and 25 feet wide with a broad pyramidal form when all grown up, Frank’s Masterpiece makes for an outstanding focal point in the landscape that will have you always looking forward to spring. very nice around patios, decks and other outdoor sitting and living spaces where the flowers and fragrance can be enjoyed from close up.
‘Frank’s Masterpiece’ is a truly special Magnolia cultivar that named after its breeder Frank Gaylon back in 1977. The plant was hybridized by crossing Magnolia soulangeana ‘Deep Purple Dream’ with Magnolia ‘Paul Cook’.
Landscape & Garden Uses
Growing up to 30 feet tall with a wide pyramidal canopy to 25 feet wide, the Frank’s Masterpiece Magnolia is ideal for use as a focal point specimen in sunny landscape borders and gardens beds. Also nice to frame the corners of tall homes and other structures and around patios and other outdoor living spaces where the canopy can provide some shade and the flowers can be enjoyed from close up. As the tree grows taller lower branches can be removed to form a highly attractive small tree form. A fine addition to purple theme gardens, fragrance gardens, cut flower gardens, or the cottage garden.
Growing Preferences
Frank’s Masterpiece is easy to grow in most any moist but well-drained acidic soil of average fertility and full sun to part shade. He prefers full sun for best flowering, however will handle some partial shade. In the South, some shade during the hottest mid-afternoon certainly won’t hurt. Avoid constantly soggy or wet soils. In alkaline soils, apply soil sulfur and/or chelated iron to increase acidity. Pruning usually isn’t necessary, however stray or damaged branches can be pruned immediately after flowering in spring. As the tree grows taller, lower branches can be removed to expose the trunk(s). Feed after flowering in spring with a mild organic plant food or a well-balanced shrub and tree food containing iron or sulfur. Having larger flowers, they are prone to damage from strong winds so planting in an area that is some what protected from harsh winds can help.
