Fuzzy Wuzzy Lambs Ear (Stachys Byzantina) – 1 Gallon Pot

Lamb’s Ears are adored for their soft and furry leaves that folks, especially kids, just irresistibly want to touch…or maybe “pet” would be a better word? ‘Fuzzy Wuzzy’ is a recently introduced cultivar featuring light grey-green leaves with silvery white new growth, both being fuzzier than the species. In early summer flower spikes 12 to 18 inches tall rise above the foliage bearing rocket-like flower clusters adorned with pretty, lavender-purple flowers. Give it a very well-drained soil and plenty of sun and Fuzzy Wuzzy will form a dense foliage carpet to about 8 inches high and 24 inches wide or more that contrasts beautifully with almost any other surrounding plants, especially those with purple flowers. Excellent as an accent in small garden spaces and containers or in groupings or as a border where space allows. You might be happy to know the deer and rabits won’t touch it, and drought, dry soil, air pollution, juglone (Black Walnut) and rocky soil won’t phase it. The only thing it doesn’t like is an overly wet soil and high humidity combined with high heat. USDA Zones 4a-8b.

 

Forming a dense spreading patch to about 8 inches tall and 24 inches or more wide, Fuzzy Wuzzy Lambs Ear is ideal for use as an accent in small garden spaces and containers or in groupings or as a border along paths and walkways and around landscape borders and perennial gardens. A fine addition to perennial gardens, rock gardens, cottage gardens, silver or white gardens, kids gardens and the Xeriscape (low water needs).

Suggested Spacing: 18″ apart for solid groupings or borders 

Fuzzy Wuzzy Lambs Ear is easy to grow provided it gets plenty of sun and is planted in moist to dry very well-drained soils, even rocky soils. It does not like a constantly wet soil. Appreciates some light afternoon shade in hot summer climates. Too much shade, however, may impede leaf drying and promote the onset of disease. The woolly leaves of this plant tend to trap moisture, and in very humid climates plants can suffer where too much moisture is present. Avoid overwatering. Some gardeners prefer to remove the flowering stems as doing so seems to enhance the groundcover effect. The flowers can also be dried for crafts.
