Description
Released by the U.S. National Arboretum and winner of the Gold Medal Plant Award in 1992, ‘Galaxy’ is adored for its uniqueness in form and flower. It forms an upright, narrow pyramidal tree with ascending branches that can grow up to 35 feet tall and 20-25 feet wide, making it a good choice for small to medium-sized landscapes where wider-growing cultivars may not fit. In late spring, after the danger of frost, it produces a profusion of stunning, large, fragrant, tulip-shaped, long-lasting, reddish-purple flowers that, when fully open, appear like a galaxy of stars. The large, 8-9-inch-long leaves are rich green with a somewhat leathery appearance that contrasts nicely with other landscape plants that have finer foliage. Galaxy is one of those special flowering trees that will always have you looking forward to its glorious spring bloom.
Landscape & Garden Uses
Forming a narrow pyramid up to 35 feet tall and 20-25 feet wide, the Galaxy Magnolia is ideal for use as a specimen in small to mid-sized landscapes or groupings where space allows. Its upright habit makes it particularly suitable for use as a street tree. It is also excellent for framing a home or other structure, and near patios and other outdoor sitting and living spaces, where it will provide some shade, allowing the beautiful flowers to be enjoyed up close. It is a fine addition to purple theme gardens, cut flower gardens, fragrance gardens, and cottage gardens.
Growing Preferences
Galaxy Magnolia is easy to grow in moist, well-drained, acidic soil of average fertility, and prefers full sun to part shade. Avoid constantly soggy or wet soils. In alkaline soils, apply soil sulfur and/or chelated iron to increase acidity for deep greening of foliage. Pruning usually isn’t necessary, however stray or damaged branches can be pruned immediately after flowering in spring. Feed after flowering in spring with a mild organic plant food or a well-balanced shrub and tree food containing iron or sulfur.
