Description
A recently introduced and rare yellow bark Japanese maple, which is actually in the Coral Bark family, ‘Gold Digger’ wows year round with both interesting bark and foliage colors. Perhaps its most attractive feature comes during winter when the bark on the trunk and branches becomes a glowing soft-yellow with stems at the top being more orange. As temperatures warm in spring the bark transitions to a glowing soft yellow-green. In early spring the new leaves emerge a peachy color transitioning to a soft lime green bordered with bronze-red. As temperatures warm approaching summer the leaves turn to solid green. With the arrival of cooler temperatures in fall they turn to a bright golden yellow aging orange and red shades before dropping to allow the bark to once again take the stage. Because it’s a new cultivar we can’t know for sure its mature size, but we hear it will form an upright vase shape 8 to 10 feet tall in 15 years or so. We’re thinking somewhere around 15 feet tall and maybe 10 feet wide at maturity, which makes it a good fit for somewhat smaller to medium size landscape spaces or as an accent tree in homen foundation plantings. A very special maple with changing colors to entertain throughout the year!
Landscape & Garden Uses
To showcase its magnificence and beauty, the Gold Digger Japanese Maple is best used in the landscape as a focal point specimen to draw attention to a specific area of the home or landscape. That said, you can plant it in spaced groupings 12 feet or more apart where space allows or use two to frame an entrance. Excellent for containers that can be situated on patios, decks and around other outdoor sitting and living spaces.
Spacing:Â At least 12 feet apart for space between trees
Note:Â Â One Japanese Maple can make a landscape…that is if you don’t overcrowd it with other trees and plants. Therefore, when selecting companions to plant under or around your Japanese Maple, make sure to select low-growing shrubs or groundcover plants that won’t interfere at all with your tree.Â
Growing Preferences
Though delicate looking, Japanese Maples are actually very tough and long-lived trees. They are very easy to grow. Container culture can extend their useful range. They are extremely easy to grow in containers, a practice taken to its most extreme form in the art of bonsai.
In their natural habitat, Japanese Maples are understory trees, growing in dappled forest sunlight at the edges of woodlands. Ideally they prefer to be grown in similar conditions. That said, you can find a complete listing of our sun-tolerant Japanese Maple varieties here, of which Gold Digger is one.Â
Most any average garden soil will grow Japanese Maples. They prefer a moist but well-drained soil rich in organic matter. As with so many other ornamental plants and trees, constantly soggy or wet soil can be problematic. So make sure to plant your Japanese Maple in a well-drained site.
