Description
Chamaecyparis pisifera ‘Gold Spangle’ is somewhat similar to the ever-popular and adored Gold Mops Cypress in shape, form, and foliage color, but is a much faster and larger grower that adds up to 1 foot in height per year, ultimately forming a somewhat irregular pyramidal to a height of 20 feet or more at maturity. As with its Sawara Cypress cousins, it responds well to trimming or shearing for size control and/or shaping purposes to form a shorter, more dense pyramid at half its mature height. It features open sprays of thread-like yellow new growth on its exterior and green on the interior. Gold Spangle is a fine, outstanding, low-maintenance specimen or grouping in sunny landscape borders and is also used to frame corners in taller home foundation plantings or used as a colorful and textural accent or grouping in privacy screen plantings.
Landscape & Garden Uses
With an upright habit and pyramidal form 15 to 20 feet or more in height and 8 to 10 feet wide at its base at maturity, the Gold Spangle Sawara Cypress is ideal for use as an exceptionally colorful and soft-textured focal point specimen tree in sunny landscape borders and to frame corners in home foundation plantings. It is also effective in groupings or in straight or staggered rows to form a colorful, evergreen privacy hedge. It does okay in containers, provided the container and the potting soil are well-drained. A fine addition to conifer gardens, yellow theme gardens, Asian theme gardens, bird gardens, and the Xeriscape (low water needs).Â
Suggested Spacing:Â Â 6 to 7 feet apart for solid hedge or screen; 14 feet or more apart for space between plants
Growing Preferences
Gold Spangle Sawara Cypress is exceptionally hardy and easy to grow in moist, well-drained soil of average fertility and full sun to mostly sun for the brightest foliage color. Some shade is tolerated, but too much and the foliage will be more chartreuse in color. We suggest 5 hours or more of direct sunlight per day. As with so many other ornamental plants, constantly soggy or wet soil is problematic. Avoid overwatering, providing only enough water to maintain a damp or moist soil. It has moderate drought tolerance when established but will appreciate an occasional deep soaking during an extended period of drought. No pruning is required to maintain its naturally dense, pyramidal form, though it can be sheared for shaping purposes to form a more dense pyramid.
