Description
Native to the Atlas Mountains of Morocco, the Golden Atlas Cedar is a stunningly beautiful evergreen conifer with spaced, weeping branches that are covered in short, stiff, blue-green older needles underneath golden-yellow to soft-yellow new growth, giving the appearance that the branches are coated in a lemony frost. Depending on the climate and environment, it typically forms an upright pyramid to 25 feet tall and 15 feet wide at its base in colder climates (zones 6-7) and up to 40 feet tall and 20 feet wide at its base in warmer climates (zones 8-9). It is exceptionally easy to grow and highly drought-tolerant once established, and you may be pleased to know that insects, diseases, and deer don’t bother it. The Golden Atlas Cedar is a truly magnificent and captivating tree in the landscape, sure to be a conversation piece.
Landscape & Garden Uses
Growing 25 to 40 feet tall and 15 to 20 feet wide over time, the Golden Atlas Cedar is ideal for use as a focal point specimen in sunny, open areas or to frame the corners of tall homes or other buildings and entrances. It can also be planted in groupings where space allows. A fine addition to rock gardens, conifer gardens, yellow theme gardens, and Xeriscape gardens (low water needs).
Growing Preferences
The Golden Atlas Cedar is very easy to grow in most average, well-drained soils that receive six or more hours of sunlight daily. Standing water or constantly soggy or wet soil can be problematic, so make sure to plant in a well-draining site. Maintenance is minimal with no pruning required. It is exceptionally drought-tolerant when established. We’ve seen no insect or disease problems.
