Description
This is the tree form topiary version of the Chamaecyparis obtusa ‘Nana Lutea’, a slow-growing Golden Dwarf Hinoki Cypress displaying delicate miniature fans of golden-yellow leaves on a rounded pyramidal form atop a single trunk. Its smaller stature to maybe 5 to 6 feet tall, including the trunk, and maybe 3 to 4 feet wide when all grown up make it a perfect choice as a unique and colorful accent tree in smaller garden spaces and containers that can be situated on or around patios, decks and other outdoor sitting and living spaces. The more sun it gets the more yellow the leaves. In shade the foliage will be more chartreuse, but still very pretty. No pruning is ever required.
Landscape & Garden Uses
The Golden Dwarf Hinoki Cypress Tree is ideal for use in pots or planted in the ground as an eye-catching focal point specimen in small garden spaces and home foundation plantings. Good drainage is essential in pots. A fine addition for Asian themed gardens, conifer gardens, yellow theme color gardens and Xeriscape gardens (low water needs).
Growing Preferences
The Dwarf Golden Hinoki Cypress is easy to grow in most any moist but well-drained soil of average fertility and full sun to part shade. The foliage will be more yellow with more sun and chartreuse yellow with more shade. We suggest at least 5 hours of direct sunlight per day for the brightest color. Constantly soggy soil or standing water is problematic. Avoid overwatering. Provide only enough water to keep the soil damp to moist. Established plants are quite drought tolerant and will only require an occasional watering during prolonged periods of drought. Maintenance is minimal. No pruning required except to remove a stray branch that is spoiling the shape of the plant or to remove a damaged plant part.
