Description
One of the most beautiful Hinoki Cypresses, Chamaecyparis obtusa ‘Fernspray Gold’, commonly known as Golden Fernspray Hinoki Cypress displays beautiful fern-like foliage on an irregular pyramidal form with ascending branches that are pendulous at the stem tips. The exposed surfaces of the leaves are golden yellow, while the shaded foliage is dark green. The variegated effect is enchanting. One of the faster growing fernspray cypresses, it can put on up to 12 inches of growth per year, reaching 10 feet in height and half as wide in 10 years., after which it grows much more slowly. This makes it ideal as a focal point specimen in smaller garden spaces, home foundation plantings, and large planters.
Â
Note:Â In hot summer climates of Zones 7 and 8, this cultivar will appreciate some filtered sun or shade during the midafternoon hours when the sunlight is most intense during the summer months. Direct sun in the morning to early afternoon and in the late afternoon and evening is fine. For the best foliage color, we suggest at least 4 hours of direct sunlight per day.
Landscape & Garden Uses
Growing 8 to 12 tall and 5 to 6 feet wide at maturity, the Golden Fernspray Hinoki Cypress is ideal for use as a focal point specimen or spaced grouping in small to medium-sized landscape spaces and home foundation plantings. It is also a good candidate for pots, planters, and other containers. It is a fine addition to conifer gardens, yellow theme gardens, and Asian theme gardens.Â
Growing Preferences
Golden Fernspray Cypress prefers moist but well-drained soil with average fertility and full sun to partial shade. The foliage color will be more intense with more sun. In Zones 7 and 8, we suggest filtered sun or shade during the afternoon when the sunlight is most intense. Morning and evening direct sunlight is fine. Constantly soggy or wet soil can be problematic. When the plant is young, check soil moisture and provide supplemental irrigation only if necessary to keep the soil damp to moist but not wet. When established, this Cypress is drought tolerant and would only need supplemental irrigation during prolonged periods of dry weather during summer. A light feeder, fertilize lightly in spring with a slow-release shrub and tree type fertilizer or a mild, organic plant food. Except to remove a stray or damaged plant part, no pruning is required.
