Description
‘Green Shadow’ is a magnificent selection of our North American native Sweetbay Magnolia discovered by world-renowned plantsmen Don Shadow. It comes from Magnolia virginiana australis, which means it’s a true evergreen and more cold hardy than others to -20F in USDA Zone 5. At our farm in Zone 6 of North Carolina, where winter-low temperatures can drop to -10F, it reliably maintains its dense, highly attractive, large glossy dark green leaves year-round. It features abundant, sweetly fragrant, cup-shaped white flowers over a long, 4-month period from late spring through late summer. It is also unique in that it has the ability to maintain a straight central trunk, which allows it to be grown full to the ground or lower branches can be removed to form a very attractive tight oval-shaped tree 25 to 35 feet tall and 12 to 18 feet wide. Exceptionally versatile, this amazing tree grows in full sun or shade and tolerates wet or average soil conditions.Â
Landscape & Garden Uses
Growing 25 to 35 feet tall and 12 to 18 feet wide, the Green Shadow Sweetbay Magnolia is ideal for use as a focal point specimen, in groupings, or in straight or staggered rows in privacy screen plantings. Can also be useful to frame the corners of tall homes and other buildings. A fine addition to fragrance gardens, North American Native gardens, and wildlife gardens.
Suggested Spacing:Â 10 to 12 feet apart for privacy screens;Â 22 or more feet apart for space between plantsÂ
Growing Preferences
The Green Shadow Sweet Bay Magnolia is highly adaptable and easy to grow in most any well-drained moist to wet soil and full sun to mostly shade. It requires no pruning though lower branches can be removed to a desired height to form a highly attractive focal point specimen tree.
