Description
A magnificent flowering tree that deserves a spot in every landscape where it will grow (USDA Zones 5-9), the Hearts A’Fire Redbud Tree is a recent introduction that wows with fiery foliage. Like other redbuds, this one begins the season in late winter to early spring with its stems smothered in clusters of vivid pinkish-purple sweet pea-like flowers. As the flower show ends, the even more spectacular foliage show begins. The heart-shaped leaves in spring are fiery shades of burgundy-red, tangerine-orange, and golden yellow. As the season progresses, the leaves mature to a reddish-green, with golden-yellow shades in fall. A small tree, Hearts A’Fire, reaches around 15 feet tall and is equally wide, making it a perfect fit as a specimen for smaller spaces or in groupings where space allows.
Landscape & Garden Uses
Growing upright with an irregularly rounded form 10 to 15 feet tall and equally wide, the Hearts A’Fire Redbud is ideal for specimen use or groupings in sunny or shady landscapes or woodland borders. It is also lovely to frame the corners of homes and to provide beauty around patios, porches, and other outdoor living spaces. It is a fine addition to red-themed gardens, native gardens, woodland gardens, and cottage gardens.
Suggested Spacing:Â 18 feet or more for space between trees
Growing Preferences
Â
The Hearts A’Fire Redbud tree is easy to grow in moist, well-drained soil of average fertility and full sun or shade. With more sun, the foliage colors will be more vivid. It is very drought tolerant when established. Standing water or constantly soggy or wet soils can be problematic, so make sure to plant in a site with well-draining soil!
