Description
A sensational new dwarf introduction from Japan, ‘Hime Shojo’ is a true dwarf Japanese Maple that might reach 5 to 6 feet tall and wide when all grown up. Its compact, densely-branched form is very full. Its small leaves emerge a sparkling cherry red in spring, gradually becoming darker in color to a maroon-red by late summer to early fall, holding its color well in sun or shade. Moreover, it puts out the cherry red new leaves all summer long, which contrasts beautifully with the darker mature foliage. The arrival of cooler fall temperatures brings brilliant red shades. Hime Shojo is an excellent choice for small garden spaces and containers that can be situated on or around patios and other outdoor sitting and living spaces. It’s also a fine candidate for bonsai. Both cold and heat tolerant for a Japanese maple, gardeners in USDA Zones 5 to 9 can enjoy this easy-to-grow diminutive beauty.
In case you were wondering about the name, ‘Hime’ means small leaves, while ‘shojo’ describes its deep maroon summer foliage color.
Landscape & Garden Uses
To showcase its magnificence and beauty, Hime Shojo Japanese Maple is best used in the landscape as a focal point specimen to draw attention to a specific area of the home or landscape. That said, you can plant it in groupings of three.
Spacing:Â At least 8 feet apart for space between trees
Note:  One Japanese Maple can make a landscape if you don’t overcrowd it with other trees and plants. Therefore, when selecting companions to plant under or around your Japanese Maple, select low-growing shrubs or groundcover plants that won’t interfere at all with your tree.Â
Growing Preferences
Though delicate-looking, Japanese Maples are actually very tough and long-lived trees that are very easy to grow. Container culture can extend their useful range. They are extremely easy to grow in containers, a practice taken to its most extreme form in the art of bonsai.
Japanese Maples are understory trees in their natural habitat, growing in dappled forest sunlight at the edges of woodlands. Ideally, they prefer to be grown in similar conditions. That said, Hime Shojo has shown very good sun tolerance.Â
Japanese maples will grow in most any average garden soil. They prefer moist but well-drained soil rich in organic matter. As with so many other ornamental plants and trees, constantly soggy or wet soil can be problematic, so make sure to plant your Japanese Maple in a well-drained site.
