Description
A very attractive tree great for use in the edible landscape, the Hybrid Chestnut bears LOADS of deliciously sweet nuts every year starting on young trees only 3 years old! The trees we ship are around 2 years old. The tasty chestnuts can be eaten raw or roasted. Exceptionally easy to grow in almost every planting zone in the U.S., this species has absolutely no problems with disease or pests. Clusters of white flower tassels, elongated deep green leathery leaves, and the green chestnut hulls add ornamental value in the landscape. Unlike oaks and other nut-bearing trees that cycle between light and heavy years, the Hybrid Chestnut produce a yearly crop of large that provides regular, high-quality food for deer, turkey, squirrels and humans!
Landscape & Garden Uses
Growing 40 to 60 feet tall and 25 to 30 feet wide, the Hybrid Chestnut is ideal for use around the home and on commercial sites or in parks or other properties that can accommodate its size. An excellent shade tree around the home and for outdoor living areas and is nice in landscape and sunny woodland borders. Also nice for framing driveways or other entryways. A fine addition to wildlife gardens, native gardens and the ornamental edible landscape.
Suggested Spacing:Â Â 35+ feet for space between trees
Growing Preferences
The Hybrid Chestnut is very easy to grow in most any moist but well-drained soil and full to mostly sun. Established trees are highly drought tolerant. Prefers an acidic soil ranging between 5.5 and 6.5 on the pH scale but will tolerate a neutral soil. Alkaline soils cause chlorosis. Extremely low maintenance and disease and insect resistant.Â
