Description
If you’ve always wanted to enjoy the beauty of a Bald Cypress but didn’t have room for such a large growing tree (70-100′), meet ‘Jim’s Little Guy’, a dwarf selection that might reach 15 feet tall and 6 to 8 feet wide when all grown up. As with its larger growing parent, you can enjoy the same soft and feathery foliage, but just more dense on this little guy. The bird feather-like leaves emerge a brilliant light green aging to rich-green and finally to an orange-bronze for weeks in fall. During winter its attractive tiered branches and fibrous bark provide unique character in the garden during the winter months. An exceptionally adaptable and easy to grow North American native, Jim’s Little Guy thrives in most any moist to wet soil in cold northern and hot southern climates (USDA Zones 5-11) and has no pest or disease problems. Jim’s Little Guy was discovered by John Berry on the edge of the main lake at JBerry Nursery in Grand Saline, Texas.
Landscape & Garden Uses
Growing 12 to 15 feet tall and 6 to 8 feet wide, the Peve Minaret Dwarf Bald Cypress tree is ideal for use as a specimen, in spaced groupings at least 6 feet apart, or in single or staggered rows to line a walkway. Excellent as a small accent tree in home foundation plantings and around patios and other outdoor sitting and living spaces. Its smaller stature makes it a perfect candidate for containers. Highly adaptable, it will thrive in moist to wet soil, even shallow standing water, so is excellent for use in swampy areas or near ponds or other bodies of water. A fine addition to native plant gardens, bog and rain gardens, conifer gardens and wildlife gardens.
Suggested Spacing:Â Best as specimen, in spaced groupings at 12’+ apart, or use two to frame an entryway
Growing Preferences
Being a North American native, Jim’s Little Guy Dwarf Bald Cypress is highly adaptable and exceptionally easy to grow in a variety of soil types, including clay, and likes full sun to light shade. It grows best in a consistently moist to wet soils, even standing water, but will tolerate dry periods when established. We suggest an occasional deep soaking during extended periods of dry weather. Maintenance is minimal to none. Pruning isn’t necessary, however an annual pruning in late winter can be performed to keep the tree more narrow or to remove lower branches. Avoid pruning in the spring when the tree is emerging from dormancy.
Do keep in mind that it is one of a few deciduous conifers, meaning its needles will drop in the fall and regrow in the spring. But its fibrous bark provides interest during the winter and contrasts beautifully with the foliage during spring, summer and fall.
