Description
‘Kaleidoscope’ is a rare and amazing Bosnian Pine recently discovered as a chance seedling by nurseryman Jason Hupp in Oregon. What’s most outstanding about this selection are the abundant clusters of tall, vertical, creamy yellow foliage candles in spring that contrast beautifully with the rich green older growth. As spring progresses and temperatures warm the golden color intensifies. As the needles elongate they turn to green with golden-yellow tips. Kaleidiscope forms an upright, narrow pyramidal tree that might reach 8 feet tall and 3 feet wide in 10 years or so. Being that it’s so new, we can’t say for sure its height at maturity. However, based on its growth rate, we think it might eventually reach about 15 to 20 feet tall and 5 to 6 feet wide at its base. This golden beauty makes for a fine specimen or spaced grouping in sunny landscape borders or as an accent or to frame corners in home foundation plantings. Its texture, form and wonderful color look right at home in a rock garden. Wherever you plant it, Kaleidoscope is sure to be a stunning stand out!
Landscape & Garden Uses
The Kaleidoscope Bosnian Pine is ideal for use as a focal point specimen or in groupings in sunny landscape borders and privacy screen plantings. Also excellent as an accent tree or to frame the corners of two-story or taller homes and other buildings. With some skillful pruning, it migh also be a candidate for topiary, but we haven’t tried that yet. Suitable for large containers. A fine addition to rock gardens, conifer gardens, yellow theme gardens and the Xeriscape (low water needs when established).
Growing Preferences
The Kaleidoscope Bosnian Pine is easy to grow in most any moist but well drained soil of average fertility and full to mostly sun, preferably 6 hours or more direct sunlight per day. Young trees will require some moisture to develop a good root system, however established trees are highly drought tolerant. Does not like a constantly soggy or wet soil. Does not require pruning however responds well to it for size control and maybe topiary. How To Prune A Pine Tree or Shrub Pine
