Description
A winter wonder, ‘Kobai’ is a Japanese Flowering Apricot cultivar adored for its spectacular and abundant display of highly fragrant, showy double deep pink to pink-red blossoms nearly covering the naked stems in mid-winter. The petals surround a prominent cluster of white stamens. Since the flowers come when temperatures are cold, they are very long-lasting. The tree in our Zone 8a gardens blooms in January. A site to behold when little to nothing else is blooming in the landscape! A moderate to fast-growing tree that reaches 20 to 25 feet tall and 15 to 20 feet wide at maturity, with no pruning to control size, Kobai is one of those rare beauties that will have you always looking forward to winter to delight the senses. It deserves a spot in every garden where it will grow. USDA Zones 5a to 9b.Â
Landscape & Garden Uses
Growing 20 to 25 feet tall and 15 to 20 feet wide without pruning to control size, the Kobai Japanese Flowering Apricot is ideal for use as a specimen in smaller landscape spaces or groupings where space allows. It is a fine addition to fragrance gardens, pink or red theme gardens, butterfly gardens, bird gardens, and cottage gardens.Â
Growing Preferences
The Japanese Flowering Apricot is easy to grow in moist, well-drained, acidic soil with average fertility and full sun to light shade. When established, it has moderate drought tolerance. We suggest at least 6 hours of direct sunlight daily for the best flowering and overall performance. No pruning is necessary; however, it responds well to it for size control and shaping purposes.Â
