Description
A lovely Japanese White Pine, Pinus parviflora ‘Koru’ is an architectural specimen with irregular branching on an overal pyramidal form with soothing texture and color that is perfect for the Japanese or Zen inpsired garden. It reaches 5 to 6 feet tall and 3 to 4 feet wide at its base at 10 years old. Mature height is unknown, but with a growth rate of 4 to 6 inches per year we’re thinking maybe 10 feet tall by 6 feet wide or so at its base over time. It features clustered puffs of curved blue-green needles with a stomatal band that adds an appealing silvery glow to its overall composition. A dynamic yet relaxing focal point in small garden spaces or in containers which can be situated on or around patios and other outdoor sitting spaces. Sure to get a lot of “oohs” and “ahhs” from observers.
Landscape & Garden Uses
Koru Japanese White Pine is ideal for use as a specimen in sunny to partially shaded smaller garden spaces and containers which can be situated on patios or around other outdoor sitting and living spaces. A fine addition to Asian theme gardens, Zen gardens, rock gardens and conifer gardens.
Suggested Spacing:Â Â Best as a specimen
Growing Preferences
Koru Japanese White Pine grows best in a moist but well-drained fertile soil in full sun but will tolerate some light afternoon shade. We suggest at least 5 hours of direct sunlight per day. As with so many other ornamental trees, constantly soggy soil can cause problems with the roots. Does not require pruning however the candles on this pine can be pruned by up to 50 percent of their length to maintain a smaller and more dense tree.
