Description
‘Lantern Fire’ is a unique version of our native Colorado Spruce adored for its breathtaking display of bright, vibrant golden-yellow new growth each spring that holds for 8 weeks! As temperatures warm in summer the foliage transitions to the blue-green we also love about Colorado Spruce. More compact than other golden selections, forming a pyramid to maybe 12 feet tall and 6 to 8 feet wide at the base when all grown up, Lantern Fire is a striking accent tree in smaller landscape spaces, home foundation plantings, and rock or conifer gardens. Perfect for an outdoor Christmas tree! This one is exceptionally heat tolerant, having survived 115 degree temperatures in Oregon with little injury to foliage. It is listed for growing in USDA Zone 8 and maybe 9 in cool-summer climates. One of those trees that will always have you looking forward to its amazing spring color show and sure to be a conversation piece!
Landscape & Garden Uses
Growing 12 feet tall and 6 to 8 feet wide at its base at maturity, the Lantern Fire Colorado Spruce is ideal for use as an accent tree in sunny landscape borders, rock or conifer gardens, or home foundation plantings. Two can be used to frame an entrance. Spaced groupings are very nice where space allows. A fine addition to conifer gardens, rock gardens, yellow or blue theme gardens, alpine gardens and Asian gardens.
Suggested Spacing:Â Best as a specimen or in spaced groupings with trees 10 feet or more apart
Growing Preferences
Colorado Blue Spruce is easy to grow in a damp to moist but well-drained soil of average fertility. As with so many other conifers, constantly soggy or wet soils can be problematic; leading to root rot or other harmful plant diseases. So make sure to plant this one in well-drained soil, whether in the ground or in pots. It grows best in full sun. We suggest at least 6 hours of direct sunlight per day for best spring foliage color. Once established water needs are lower when growing in the ground. In pots, soil moisture will need to be monitored more closely, especially during summer. When the top two inches of soil is dry, provide water.
