Description
One of the best-of-the-best of the North American native shade trees, the Legacy Sugar Maple was brought to the world back in 1967 by nurseryman Bill Wandell, and has stood the test of time for many good reasons. With this one, he left quite a legacy in the form of trees he brought into the world. Out of 199 siblings it outperformed, Legacy grows faster and is more heat tolerant, producing thicker, glossier leaves in more density. Bill trialed Legacy for 14 years, making sure it was worthy over the long term before introducing it to the market. A large and noble tree, Legacy forms an upright rounded canopy to maybe 40 to 50 feet tall and 30 to 40 feet wide densely clothed in dark green leaves through the warm season that transition to unrivaled fiery orange and red shades in the fall. Very easy to grow in sunny to partially shaded landscape borders and around patios, decks and other outdoor living spaces for shade, Legacy is an awesome low maintenance and pest and disease-free maple for outstanding form and fall color, and maple syrup of you want to tap the trunk!
Landscape & Garden Uses
Typically growing up to 50 feet in height and 30 to 40 feet wide, the Legacy Sugar Maple is ideal for use as a specimen, in groupings or in straight or staggered rows as a screen or to delineate property lines or line a driveway. Though there aren’t the concerns with surface roots with sugar maples, we suggest spacing at least 15 feet from a drive or walkway. Also nice to provide shade near the home or around outdoor sitting and living areas, to frame the corners of tall homes and other structures, and for reforestation projects. When planted on the west side of the home the shade provided will substantially reduce cooling costs. A fine addition to wildlife gardens, native plant gardens, orange theme gardens and sunny to partially shaded woodland borders.
Suggested Spacing: 25 to 30 feet apart for screen plantings; 50 feet or more apart for space between trees; space trees at least 15 feet from a drive or walkway
Growing Preferences
The Sugar Maple is very easy to grow in most any moist but well-drained soils of average fertility and full sun to part shade. Grows poorly in compacted, poorly drained soils that tend to hold too much water.
