Description
An ornamental grass that thrives in deep to part shade, Lemon Zest is one of the lightest and brightest of the Japanese Forest Grass varieties, which are native to moist mountain and woodland areas in central Japan. The slender, bamboo-like leaves form a softly cascading mound that waves in the slightest of breezes, providing graceful movement and a look of elegance in the garden. The foliage emerges green in spring transitioning to brilliant chartreuse with yellow and ivory white striping, with variegation and coloration being more intense in shade and less with more sun. At 12 to 18 inches tall and 2 feet wide, Lemon Zest is a glowing accent in small garden spaces and containers or grouping or border where space allows. Looks right at home in the shade garden and around garden ponds, streams and other bodies of water.
Landscape & Garden Uses
Growing to around 12 to 18 inches tall and slowly spreading up to 2 feet wide, the Lemon Zest Japanese Forest Grass can be grown in garden beds or containers. It is ideal for use as an accent in smaller garden spaces or in groupings or as a border along walks, paths or around patios and other outdoor living spaces. Nice as a solo or mixed with other plants in pots, planters and other containers. Looks especially nice around garden ponds and is a fine addition to ornamental grass gardens, yellow theme gardens, rain gardens, Asian gardens, shade gardens, and rock gardens.

Growing Preferences
Lemon Zest Japanese Forest Grass is easy to grow in consistently moist but well-drained soil high in organic matter and deep shade to part shade. Morning and evening sun are fine but direct afternoon sun can scorch the leaves. When grown in part shade, the yellow tones in the foliage will predominate. Prune before new growth begins to emerge in late winter or very early spring. At this time simply cut plants back to just above the ground.
