Description
‘Lima Gold’ is a dwarf introduction from Richard Wolff that is similar in branch structure to ‘Mikawa Yatsubusa’ but with a more narrow leaf that provides a visually softer texture. ‘Lima Gold’ has a tight, upright habit with robust growth when young becoming a little more open but elegantly scaled with age to maybe 4 feet tall and and 5 feet wide in 10 or so years. The tiny quarter-sized leaves are lively and fresh emerging a golden lime-green edged in orange to pinkish red maturing to a rich green with golden-green new leaves during summer. Fall brings golden-yellow turning to orange-red. Perfect for small garden spaces and containers, Lima Gold is a charming Japanese maple that is sure to be a conversation piece in the garden or in containers situated on patios, terraces, decks or around other outdoor living spaces where its beauty and colors can be enjoyed from close up. It thrives in sun or shade with more open branching in shade and has demonstrated a high tolerance for heat and humidity in USDA Zones 5a to 9a and 9b in cool-summer climates.
Landscape & Garden Uses
To showcase its magnificence and beauty, the Lima Gold Japanese Maple is best used in smaller landscape spaces as a focal point specimen. That said, you can plant it in groupings of three where space allows. Be careful not to overcrowd this little charmer with other trees and plants. When selecting companions to plant under or around it make sure to select low-growing, ground-hugging, groundcover plants that won’t interfere at all with your tree.Â
Spacing:Â At least 8 feet apart for space between trees over the long term
Growing Preferences
Though delicate looking, Japanese Maples are actually very tough and long-lived trees. They are very easy to grow in the ground or in in containers, a practice taken to its most extreme form in the art of bonsai.
In their natural habitat, Japanese Maples are understory trees, growing in dappled forest sunlight at the edges of woodlands. Ideally they prefer to be grown in similar conditions. That said, you can find a complete listing of our sun-tolerant Japanese Maple varieties here, of which Lima Gold is one. That said, in hot summer climates just about all Japanese maples would appreciate some filtered sun or shade during the hot mid afternoon hours.Â
Most any average garden soil will grow Japanese Maples. They prefer a moist but well-drained soil rich in organic matter. As with so many other ornamental plants and trees, constantly soggy or wet soil can be problematic. So make sure to plant your Japanese Maple in a well-drained site.
