Description
As its name suggests, Marsh Marigold prefers life on the marshy side. It is perfect for planting and growing in sunny to partially shaded garden areas where the soil tends to stay mucky and wet, or even in shallow standing water or the margins of the garden pond. It forms a dense mound of attractive, glossy, heart-shaped, dark green leaves with wavy edges. From early spring through early summer, cute and abundant 1″ cup-shaped, buttercup-like flowers with six waxy, bright yellow sepals (petals) surrounding a cluster of bright golden-yellow stamens sit just above the foliage. An easy-to-grow North American native that will always have you looking forward to its spring color show, and you might be happy to know that, due to the levels of alkaloids and glycosides in the leaves, the deer, rabbits, and other pests leave the Marsh Marigold alone.Â
Wildlife Benefits
Marsh Marigold flowers attract beneficial pollinators, and wood ducks and other fowl eat the seeds.
Landscape / Garden Uses
Growing 10 to 12 inches tall and 18 to 24 inches wide, the Marsh Marigold is ideal as an accent in small garden spaces, or groupings or mass plantings in larger spaces. It is also lovely in container gardens. It can be grown in a container in shallow water at the edge of the garden pond or other bodies of water. It is a fine addition to water gardens, bog gardens, wetland gardens, native gardens, beneficial pollinator gardens, meadow gardens, and yellow theme gardens.
Growing Preferences
Marsh Marigold is easy to grow in consistently moist or wet soil with average fertility and full sun or partial shade. It will even thrive in shallow standing water. If the soil dries out during summer, the plant might go dormant, but it usually survives. We suggest at least 5 hours of direct sunlight daily for best flowering and overall performance.Â
