Description
One of our favorites of all Golden Hinoki Cypress varieties, ‘Melody’ features extremely lacy and twisting sprays of luscious bright lemon-yellow foliage on a small pyramidal form that slowly reaches 6 to 7 feet tall and 3 to 4 feet wide at its base when all grown up. It thrives in full sun with no foliage burn, even during the heat of summer, and does equally as well in part shade. The foliage tips turn to a beautiful orange-bronze color during the winter months changing back to yellow when temperatures warm in spring. One of those plants with foliage that folks just have to reach our and touch, Melody’s smaller stature and gorgeous looks make her a fine choice as an eye-catching specimen in small garden spaces or containers. Â
Landscape & Garden Uses
Growing slowly in a pyramidal form 6 to 7 feet tall and 3 to 4 feet wide at the base, the Melody Golden Hinoki Cypress is ideal for use as an eye-catching specimen in small garden spaces and home foundation plantings or in spaced groupings in larger spaces. It does very well in containers provided there is good drainage. A fine addition to Asian themed gardens, conifer gardens, yellow theme gardens, and Xeriscape gardens (low water needs).
Growing Preferences
The Melody Golden Hinoki Cypress is easy to grow in most any moist but well-drained soil of average fertility and full sun to part shade. Constantly soggy soil or standing water is problematic. Avoid overwatering. Provide only enough water to keep the soil damp to moist. Established plants are quite drought tolerant and will only require an occasional watering during prolonged periods of drought. Maintenance is minimal. No pruning required except to remove a stray or damaged branch ot stem that is spoiling the shape of the plant.
