DescriptionÂ
A distinctive and lovely cold hardy North American native fern that can be grown outdoors in USDA Zones 3 to 8, withstanding temperatures to -40F, or indoors as a year round houseplant. The Northern Maidenhair Fern is adored for its delicate, lacy bright green fronds with black stems (midribs), and the beautiful, soft texture it provides in the shade garden. It grows in an arching clump to about 18 to 24 inches high and equally as wide. If several are planted 18 inches apart in a garden bed they will slowly spread to form a lush and beautiful colony. It performs best in shady environments with moist, organically rich acid soils. A reliable fern that has come back every year for many years in our Georgia gardens, we’ve seen no problems with pests or disease and the deer and rabbits turn their nose up to it.
Landscape & Garden Uses
Growing 15 to 30 inches tall and 18 or so inches wide, the Northern Maidenhair Fern can be grown in garden beds or containers situated indoors or outdoors. In the garden, it is ideal for use as an accent in small garden spaces or groupings in larger spaces, where it will slowly spread to form a beautiful colony. Looks great near the garden pond or other bodies of water or in containers that can be placed on patios, decks, or anywhere in the landscape that gets shade to part shade. Avoid direct afternoon sun. A fine addition to woodland gardens, shade gardens, native gardens and mixed fern gardens.
Growing Preferences
The Northern Maidenhair Fern is easy to grow in a moist but well-drained soil of average or better fertility in part shade to full shade. Some morning and evening sun is okay but avoid direct afternoon sun. It prefers a consistently moist soil rich in organic matter though will tolerate short dry periods when established.
