Description
Closely related to Japanese maples, ‘Pacific Fire’ is a fantastic selection of our native Vine Maple. It is adored for its brilliant red young branches on soft orange-red older branches, hence the name. The bark colors have a lovely effect in the landscape during the winter months when the tree goes leafless and peeks through the foliage during the warm seasons. As the tree matures the trunks often have an interesting rustic appearance. The palmate foliage is very attractive as well. New leaves emerge reddish purple quickly transitioning to light green or chartreuse developing red highlights during summer. Fall brings yellow, orange and red shades. At 12 to 18 feet tall and 10 to 15 feet wide, depending on sun exposure, Pacific Fire is a good fit for small to medium size landscape and garden spaces. In hot-summer climates, Pacific Fire will prefer some filtered sun or shade during the afternoon hours and will reach 12 to 15 feet height. In cool-summer climates it will grow in full sun and reach the 18 feet height. An eye catching specimen with year round appeal, it is well-suited in the shadow of larger trees and can be grown as a multi-stem large shrub or lower branches can be removed to form a highly attractive small tree.
Landscape & Garden Uses
To showcase its delicate beauty, the Pacific Fire Vine Maple is ideal for use as a specimen or in groupings in sunny or partially shaded environments. That said, in hot climates we advise shade or filtered sun in the afternoon hours. Similar to Japanese Maples, we think it looks best in a partially shaded environment such as along the edges of woodland borders. Very nice around the garden pond. Also, a good candidate for espalier (trained to grow flat against a wall) or to frame the corners of homes and other structures. Dark colored shrubs and groundcovers plants really help to show off the light green leaves and a light background shows off the red and orange branches in winter. A fine addition to woodland gardens, Asian theme gardens and around water gardens.Â
Suggest Spacing:Â At least 16 feet apart for space between trees
Growing Preferences
The Pacific Fire Vine Maple grows best in a moist but well-drained acidic soil rich in organic matter and sun or part shade. Amend clay and other heavy soils to ensure good drainage. In hot-summer climates we suggest afternoon shade or filtered sun during the mid afternoon hours.Â
