Description
A lovely, sensory wonder and one of the most popular Witch Hazels, Hamamelis ‘Pallida’ is adored for its beauty, colors, and fragrance. From midwinter to early spring, abundant, large, frost-proof, ribbon-like, soft-yellow flowers clustered along the bare branches emit a strong and delicately sweet aroma in the garden. Each flower has four strap-shaped, crinkled petals. Large, oval-shaped, rich green leaves up to 6 inches long emerge after flowering and remain attractive through the warm seasons, turning to pretty shades of yellow and orange during the fall. It is a vase-shaped shrub 10 to 12 feet tall and equally wide with ascending branches. As it grows taller, lower branches can be removed to form a beautiful small tree.
Landscape & Garden Uses
Growing 10 to 12 feet tall and equally wide, the Pallida Golden Witch Hazel can be grown as a large shrub or small tree. As a shrub it is ideal for use as a specimen, in groupings, or as a natural hedge. As it grows taller, lower branches can be removed to form a highly attractive small tree that serves well as a colorful focal point specimen in landscape borders and home foundation plantings. It is a fine addition to sunny or partially shaded woodland borders, fragrance gardens, flowering shrub borders, yellow-theme gardens, and cottage gardens.
Suggested Spacing:Â Â 8 feet apart for solid hedge; 14 feet or more apart for space between plants
Growing Preferences
The Pallida Witch hazel is easy to grow in moist, well-drained soil of average fertility and full sun to partial shade. It will be smaller in size with more shade. It prefers moist, acidic soil rich in organic matter but also grows well in clay soils, though we suggest amending heavy clay to ensure good drainage. Little, if any, pruning is required, but it responds well to it for shaping purposes or tree-forming.
