Description
Discovered on Vancouver Island back in the 1960s, ‘Papoose’ Sitka Spruce is a top-notch North American native conifer indigenous to the Pacific Northwest. A dwarf form of Picea sitchensis, it forms a globe to maybe 3 to 4 feet tall and 3 feet wide at 10 years of age becoming a broad rounded cone that reaches 7 to 8 feet tall and 5 to 6 feet wide when all grown up. In late spring clusters of buds at the stem tips open to form bursts of new blue foliage that matures to two-tone blue and green needles. Tolerating exposed spots and high winds makes this lovely low-maintenance evergreen a fine selection for coastal gardens and high altitude gardens up to 2,700 feet. Excellent for small garden spaces, patio containers and home foundation plantings and a fine addition to conifer and rock gardens.Â
Landscape & Garden Uses
The Papoose Sitka Spruce is ideal for use as an accent specimen in small garden spaces, home foundation plantings, conifer or rock gardens and containers, or in spaced groupings at 7 or more feet apart where space allows. A fine addition to conifer gardens, blue theme gardens and rock gardens.
Suggested Spacing:Â 7 or more feet apart for spaced groupings
Growing Preferences
Papoose Sitka Spruce is easy to grow and practically no-maintenance. It prefers a moist but well-drained acidic soil and full to mostly sun. We suggest 5 hours or more of direct sunlight per day. Pruning isn’t required, because it remains naturally compact on its own. That said, a stray stem can be snipped off as needed. Tolerates dry periods when established but will appreciate supplemental irrigation during prolonged drought. In pots, soil moisture will need to be monitored more closely, especially during summer. When the top two inches of soil is dry, provide water. hardy in Zones 5-9 in cool-summer climates and Zones 5-7 in hot-summer climates.
